Tommi

Tommi a 24 year old Standard bred gelding, was abandoned in a paddock with no food, care or veterinary treatment. He was left for approx. 2 years to ‘fend’ for himself before we received a call for help from a neighbour.

On arriving at the property to meet Tommi I was struck with an overwhelming feeling of sadness and despair. Witnessing his condition and the suffering he had been forced to endure was heart breaking.

His body was skin and bones, his face gaunt and his eyes withdrawn. I looked into his deep dark sunken eyes and made him a promise that day that he would never be alone or suffer again.

He was surrendered into my care. Vets were called to the property to assess Tommi’s condition and stabilize him to enable his transport. Although Tommi was emaciated and had a body score of 0, there was no option but to attempt the move, Tommi was in grave need of help.

Once he arrived safely at the sanctuary, veterinary care was immediate, and a feed plan was developed to help Tommi slowly gain weight whilst giving his starved body the vitamins and nutrients he so desperately required.

His blood test results were so bad the vets questioned whether he would make it.

Over the next 6 months Tommi fought for his life. He was on antibiotics for numerous infections, he had mutiple organ issues, he received treatment for constant bouts of colic, and underwent a number of surgeries on his mouth to remove damaged teeth and treat ulcers & abscesses and multiple mouth infections.

Our farrier provided regular hoof care to get his hooves back in shape. The deep crevices in his hoof walls telling the tale of the struggle he had endured.

Tommi had a long journey of recovery ahead of him but this darling boy was never going to be alone again.

Tommi- 1 Year on

Beautiful Tommi has found his love for life, he gallops free, bucking, playing and rolling in the lush green grass. The trust we have shared from day 1 is remarkable especially after the abandonment & neglect he experienced at the hands of humans. I will never understand how anyone can allow an animal, so reliant on us for survival, to suffer so much.

The light has returned to Tommi’s beautiful eyes and they shine once again with a zest for life and a sparkle of happiness. He has put on over 150kgs so far and is thriving. He has made a forever friend with Molly an elderly pony recently rescued and after love at first sight they are now inseparable.

Tommi is a gentle boy and although his spirit was almost broken, his will to live was so strong. Like everyone who joins the sanctuary he is so deserving of a life filled with love and kindness.

We see you Tommi, you are now safe, you are respected, you are valued and you are oh so Loved x

Into the light

“Sheep — like so many animals farmed for their meat and fibre — are often only ‘valued’ as commodities, not as the individuals they are.

Sadly, most people will never get to know a sheep as a loved companion, and so will never understand just how affectionate and loving these animals are, each with individual personalities”
